Whitby Harbour is located at the mouth of the River Esk where it flows into North Sea. It covers an area of around 80 acres and possibly dates back to the 12th century. There is a bridge at the harbour that was constructed in 1908 which spans the River Esk and two piers that jut out into the sea. Each pier, known as the west and east pier contains a lighthouse. The harbour area is open at all times and local fishermen often gather in this area to sell their days catch to the tourists. The long distance walk “The Cleveland Way” passes close to this attraction.
