Royal Pump Room Museum (Harrogate, United Kingdom)

In the days before cheap European travel, Harrogate was a top tourist attraction for people wanting to ‘take the waters’ and enjoy a spa visit. Much of Harrogate’s success was due to having the strongest sulphorous waters of any spa in Europe. The Pump House - as the name suggests - was the place that pumped the waters for the various bath houses around the town. Today the building houses a museum, run by the local council, which tells visitors about the history of Harrogate as a spa town, describes the social and health aspects of taking a trip to the baths, shows exhibitions about Victorian life and offers visitors the dubious pleasure of tasting the water. From April to October, the museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday and from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sundays (except in August when the hours are from 11 am to 5 pm). During the winter months the museum closes at 4 pm Entrance fees are £2.80 for adults and £1.50 for children. Family tickets are also available.
