Windermere (Bowness-on-Windermere, United Kingdom)
With its name derived from the Scandinavian for “lake of a man called Vinandr’”, Windermere is the largest natural lake in England and lies at the heart of the Lake District National Park. There are bus services to villages all around the lake. A ferry also crosses the waist of the lake from Bowness pier. The lake plays host to a large range of water activities (yachting, canoeing, kayak, fishing and, in limited sites, swimming). Fourteen islands are dotted around Windermere,of which one (Silver Holme) was the inspiration for the book “Swallows and Amazons”. On either side of the lake the hills and fells provide walking and climbing opportunities. The Lake District National Park Authority website has a two page information document (download in pdf format) outlining things to do on and around the lake and listing a range of useful addresses and contact telephone numbers for visitors. Parking is available at designated sites.
