Brantwood (Coniston, United Kingdom)
During his life, John Ruskin was an author, poet, artist, critic and philosopher. Born in London in 1819 he settled in the Lake District in 1872 and lived there until his death in 1900. Brantwood had been built at the end of the previous century in a 250 acre wooded estate, perched on an escarpment on the eastern side of Coniston Water opposite the village. Ruskin enlarged the house and also set out to landscape the surrounding grounds and gardens. Many of the rooms of the house have been preserved as they were in Ruskin’s day and contain his art collection, books, paintings and personal effects. The gardens have a wide variety of habitats, beds, shrubberies and woods with names such as “Hortus Inclusus” and “The Fern Garden”. There are also walks through the grounds. On site are the Coach House Craft Gallery, the Jumping Jenny tea shop and the Severn Studio Gallery.
