Guests found Macdonald Swan to offer lovely fell views, a short walk to the pretty village of Grasmere, and a central, relaxing base to explore other spots in the Lakes District, like Windermere or Ambleside.
Those who stayed enjoyed the lovely grounds and character of the old coaching inn, while the clean, quiet, and well-furnished rooms also proved to meet guests’ requirements.
The buffet breakfasts were praised for their wide selection and the cooked options thought to be well-cooked, while the evening meals and ales in the bar are apparently also nice.
A small number of guests at Macdonald Swan found the hotel to be a bit tired and dated, while some thought the Wi-Fi signal could have been better.
The hotel room rates were thought to be a little too high by a few guests, and the prices charged for drinks also raised a few eyebrows.
Those who plan on doing a lot of hiking, have heavy luggage or mobility problems, should be aware that there are a fair number of stairs to navigate on the way up to the second floor.
