Cragside (Rothbury, United Kingdom)

Cragside House was built by Lord Armstrong, inventor and armament manufacturer, as his family home. It perches on a rocky outcrop high above the wooden and moorland estate. The house was the first to be lit by electric lighting, the current generated by water power on the property. It is now a museum of his life and times; the rooms are furnished for the period and there are memorabilia of the royalty and nobility who have stayed there. The gardens are reputed to be amongst the finest Victorian designs in the country with a large rock pool and extensive rhododendron and azalea plantations. The estate also has a restaurant, a cafe and a gift shop. A rewiring programme has been in effect during 2006. Opening times: 2006 Gardens and Estate only 10:30am - 7:30pm (Tues - Sun, Bank holidays) April 1st - October 29th 11am - 4pm (Wed - Sun) November 1st - December 17th Tickets: Adults £ 6.50 Child: £ 3.00 Opening Times: 2007 House, Gardens and Estate From April 1st Separate entrance required for house and gardens Cragside is managed by the National Trust. NT members free. There is a car park and picnic area on site. The estate is wheelchair accessible but should be aware of steep inclines and adverse cambers.
