The North Bay area of Scarborough is separated from its other beach South Bay by a peninsula of land on which the castle stands. The North Bay is less commercialised than the South Bay area and has a 2 kilometre stretch of sand. Since this is less sheltered than South Bay this is where the biggest sea waves occur and as a result this area has become popular with surfers. A miniature railway runs along North Bay from the Sea Life marine centre to Peasholm Park. The long distance walk “The Cleveland Way” passes close to this beach.
