Clifford's Tower (York, United Kingdom)

Clifford’s Tower is the name given to the keep of York Castle. This keep became a place of refuge for the Jews of the city that hid here to escape persecution under the reign of King Richard 1. This siege ended with many of the Jews committing suicide rather than having to surrender but in a final act of defiance the wooden keep was burned to the ground and destroyed. During the second half of the 13th century a new stone keep was built. This keep became known as Clifford’s Tower, after Roger de Clifford, who was hanged here in 1322. Clifford’s Tower has a quatrefoil plan and is the only example of its kind in England. Admission charges are as below: Adult - £3.00 (4.5 Euros) Children - £1.50 £(2.75 Euros) Concession - £2.30 (3.5 Euros) Family ticket - £7.50 (11.25 Euros) Entry is free for English Heritage Members
