York Castle Museum in York is located on the site of York Castle which was constructed in 1068. It sits very close to Clifford’s Tower and is housed in a former prison building that dates from the early 18th century. The displays within the museum include a Jacobean dining room and a Victorian parlour. There is also Dr Kirk’s Gallery, which depicts everyday life in York and this includes a re-creation of a typical street called Kirkgate (after Dr Kirk) that is complete with authentic shop fronts. Another exhibit covers the 1960s and there is also a Children’s Gallery, a Barn Gallery and displays of military artefacts and costumes. Some of the cells of the original prison have been converted into little craft workshops and one of its highlights is the Condemned Cell that was once occupied by the legendary outlaw, Dick Turpin. York Castle Museum is open daily (except a few public holidays) from 9.30am until 5pm. Admission prices are: Adult - £7.50 (9 Euros) Child - £4.00 (5 Euros) Concessions - £6.50 (8 Euros) Family tickets are also available.
