St Nicholas (Hornsea, United Kingdom)

St Nicholas Church in Hornsea has a history that dates back to the 11th century, although most of the present church is from the 14th and 15th centuries, when it was re-constructed from local cobblestones. It stands on a slightly elevated spot right besides the busy main street of this small East Yorkshire town. The church has a Grade 1 listed status and contains a cross in its churchyard that originally stood in the market place. There are many tales associated with St Nicholas Church including the crypt, which was used by smugglers in the 17th century by permission of the parish clerk. The contraband was discovered when the roof blew off, revealing the hidden goods. The church is open for visitors most days and admission is free of charge.
