Royal St George's Golf Club (Sandwich, United Kingdom)

Royal St George’s Golf Club at Sandwich is a championship course and one of The Open Championship venues. It will host The Open in 2011, eight years since the previous occasion when it was won by Ben Curtis. The course was laid out in 1887 and was named to rival St Andrew’s. The royal accolade was granted by Edward VII in 1902 and the then Prince of Wales later became club captain. Ian Fleming was captain-elect here and the golf scenes from Goldfinger were said to be inspired by Royal St George’s. The course is a par 70, 7204 yards from the championship tees and 6630 yards from the medal tees. It runs along the sand dunes of Sandwich Bay which give rise to unsighted shots and windy conditions. It also boasts the largest and deepest bunker in the UK. Non-members are allowed to play (maximum handicap 18). Other facilities include a driving range, practice nets and putting green. There is a pro shop which sells golfing equipment and where tuition is available. The clubhouse has catering facilities. The dining room, where a dress code operates, is open only to members and corporate groups. Casual dress is allowed in the snack bar. An outside terrace is available for summer weather.
