The Reading Festival occurs over the August Bank Holiday weekend and features mainstream live music acts on the main stage plus other live acts including lesser known artists on a series of smaller stages. The origins of the Reading Festival date back to 1971 although the National Jazz Festival took place on the same site from 1961 until 1970 and it was out of this festival that the Reading one was born. Between 1998 and 2007 this festival was a combined event with one one in Leeds, which takes place over the same weekend, both of these events were sponsored by Carling and were officially collectively known as the Carling Weekend. Many of the same acts appear at both festivals on alternate days. Carling withdrew its sponsorship in November 2007 so the 2008 festival will once again revert back to its original name - The Reading Festival.
