The Shard (London, United Kingdom)

The Shard is a skyscraper on the south bank of the Thames at London Bridge. When it was topped out in April 2012 it became, at least temporarily, the tallest building not only in the UK but also in Europe. Officially known as London Bridge Tower the name Shard has stuck because of its narrow, spiked shape and the angled glass panels cladding its sides. The glass panels are intended to reflect the sky at different times of the day and the year. The building’s dimensions are: 310m (1016 feet) high, 95 floors, 110,000 square metres (1,200,000 square feet) of floor space. It will contain office accommodation, a hotel, restaurants, flats and a public viewing gallery. The architect was the award-winning Renzo Piano, who was also responsible for the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, among many other famous commissions. He took his inspiration from 18th century paintings of London dotted with church spires. The structure is based on steel frames which remove the need for supporting columns as these reduce the available floor space especially as the tower tapers. These frames also allow the glass panels to be hung on the outside.
