Leeds West Indian Carnival (Leeds, United Kingdom)

The Leeds West Indian Carnival takes place in the Chapeltown and Harehills districts of the city at the end of August each year and is often simply referred to as the Leeds Carnival. The Leeds West Indian Carnival first took place in 1967 and it has been an annual event ever since. It is Europe’s oldest West Indian Carnival. The event is a celebration of all things Caribbean and includes the carnival procession that starts and finishes at Potternewton Park where a crowd of up to 150,000 people gather. The carnival takes about 3 hours to cover its route. A music stage in Potternewton Park provides live music whilst the parade itself includes hundreds of costumed dancers, several masquerade bands, steel bands and floats. A large number of craft and food stalls can be found in both Potternewton Park and along its route.
