Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site (Matlock Bath, United Kingdom)
Derwent Valley Mills were designated a World Heritage Site in December 2001. They are located along the River Derwent in Derbyshire in England and are administered by the Derwent Valley Mills Partnership. This international designation confirmed the importance of the area as one of the birthplaces of the modern factory system in the UK, where in the 18th Century water power was used for textile production. The English modern factory system owes its origins to the mills at Cromford, where Richard Arkwright’s inventions were first put into industrial-scale production. The workers’ housing, railway and other structures associated to the mills are still visible on site and illustrate the socio-economic development of the area. Events are regularly held in the area and can be seen on the UNESCO heritage Internet site.
