Accommodations in Godmanchester near Island Hall (Godmanchester, United Kingdom)
Island Hall (Godmanchester, United Kingdom)
Island Hall in Godmanchester is an early Georgian country house, dating from the late 1740s. Apart from a period from World War 2 (when it was requisitioned) to 1983, it has been owned by the same family since 1804 and remains privately owned and occupied today. The house sits on the banks of the Great Ouse and a bridge links the gardens to an island in the river, from which the house takes its name. The red-brick building is of classical design with a three storey façade and triangular pediment. The interior is English baroque and is especially noted for its oak staircase and original carved wooden panelling in the drawing room and dining room. The gardens are surrounded by 18th century brick walls. Visits have to be booked in advance and guided tours are provided by a family member. Various refreshment options are available and included with the tour. Rooms can also be hired for private functions. Children under 13 are not allowed during the day and under 16s are not allowed for evening functions.
