Cambridge Castle (Cambridge, United Kingdom)
Cambridge Castle stands on Castle Hill in Cambridge, which was the focus of settlements here from pre-Roman times, as the small rise commanded a crossing point of the river. The Romans built a town called Duroliponte and later the Anglo-Saxons used the hill for defence. The Normans built a motte-and-bailey castle which was extended in the 13th century with the addition of curtain walls and a moat. The following centuries saw it fall into decay and stone was taken for other buildings in Cambridge, until in the 1640s it was again refortified during the Civil War. Today only the motte can be seen although that stands at an impressive 10 metres high and affords a fine view. The site is owned by Cambridgeshire County Council, whose administrative building, Shire Hall, stands in what was the inner bailey. The site is freely accessible to visitors.
