Wimpole Hall (Arrington, United Kingdom)

Wimpole Estate in Arrington near Royston comprises Wimpole Hall, the largest country house in Cambridgeshire, and 2500 acres of surrounding land. The Hall was first built in 1643, but the modification to the Palladian style we see today was carried out by famous architects in the 18th century most notably Sir John Soane. The latter’s Yellow Drawing Room, with its dome, vault and decoration is particularly noteworthy. Eventually upkeep became too expensive and the last owner, the daughter of Rudyard Kipling, devoted her energies to restoring some of its past glories and reacquiring furniture and paintings. She bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1976. In parallel with the development of the house, the gardens were laid out in the style of the day by famous landscape gardeners. The grand avenue approaching the house and formal gardens were the work of Charles Bridgeman, while the “naturalised” area of trees, lakes and a gothic folly were created by Capability Brown. The site also has a working farm, refreshments, children’s playground, car park (fee paying), shop and holds special events through the year. For opening times see the website.
