New Forest National Park (Lymington, United Kingdom)

The New Forest National Park was created in 2005, the first new designation for 50 years and the first in the south east of England. It covers 220 square miles between Southampton Water and the Avon Valley, and north to the Wiltshire Downs. As ancient woodland dating from the time of William the Conqueror, who set it aside for hunting, it was felt necessary to protect and preserve this environment, especially in view of pressure on land in the south east. Despite its name it is not all forest. Much of it is characterised as heath, and it also encompasses bogs, farmland, saltmarsh and mudflats. In fact, it is the largest remaining area of lowland heath in Europe. For the visitor there are numerous trails and paths to explore by bike, on foot or hacking on the famous New Forest ponies. Given its extent, it covers several towns and villages, although Lymington is the headquarters of the National Park Authority. There is a visitor centre here as well as at Lyndhurst and Ringwood.
