Westminster Bridge (London, United Kingdom)

The Westminster Bridge spans the River Thames between Westminster’s Middlesex Bank, where the Houses of Parliament are located, and the South Bank next to the old County Hall. The bridge in its current form opened in 1862. It is 827 feet (252 meters) long and 84 feet (26 meters) wide and includes lanes for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Its design features seven wrought-iron gothic arches, with painted surfaces done in the same green as used for the bench seats found in the House of Commons. The Westminster Bridge is the oldest of London’s cross-Thames bridges currently in operation. Together with its predecessor on the site, it is credited with facilitating much of the growth on London’s South Bank. Today it links many of the agencies of Britain’s national government in Westminster with the business and cultural institutions of the South Bank. The nearest Underground stop to the bridge is Westminster Station.
