Downing Street (London, United Kingdom)

Downing Street in London is one of the city’s most well-known locations and has been the official residences of the Prime Minister of the UK and his Chancellor of the Exchequer for more than 200 years. The most famous number on the street is Number 10 where the Prime Minister usually lives and works. The image of the front door with a uniformed policeman standing outside is frequently shown on television news programmes. Sir George Downing built the street in the 1680s on land he was given in reward for services to King Charles II. Access to the street has been restricted for many years and security checks have been required since 1989 and tourists will have to take photos from the barriers at the end of the street.
