Parliament Square Garden is a small park located across St. Margaret Street from the Houses of Parliament (to the east) and adjacent to St. Margaret’s Church and Westminster Abbey (to the south). This park, like Trafalgar Square, is maintained by the Greater London Authority. The area that forms the Square was once part of the churchyard for St. Margaret’s Church. Now its prinipcal purposes are to provide a green space in the heart of London and to preserve air space helping to accentuate the historic landmarks it adjoins. Parliament Square consists of a lawn and mature trees surrounded by wide walkways interspersed with benches. It is also home to serveral statues honoring some of Britain’s most prominent prime ministers and a few foreign statesmen, including Winston Chruchill, Benjamin Disraeli, Nelson Mandela, and Abraham Lincoln.
