Tintern Abbey (Chepstow, United Kingdom)

Located between the A466 and the River Wye, Tintern Abbey is the Gothic-style ruins of a Cistercian abbey which dates from 1131. Buildings were extended in the late 13th-century and it was considered one of the richest Irish abbeys when the Dissolution of the Monasteries came to pass under Henry VIII in 1536. The buildings fell into decay until attempts were started to preserve the site in the late 18th-century and since 1984 it has been maintained by Cadw, the Welsh equivalent of English Heritage. Archeological excavations done from 1982 - 1994 have revealed various new finds. Tintern Abbey has inspired various paintings by Turner and also features in the poetry of Wordsworth and Tennyson. The site is open to the public from 09h00 to 17h00 daily (April to October) and the rest of the year from 09h30 to 16h00 (Mon. to Sat.) and 11h00 to 16h00 on Sundays. The entry tariff for adults is £3.60 and concessions are available. Facilities for disabled visitors are provided and there is parking as well as a giftshop and exhibition venue. Details of forthcoming events are published at the website.
