The Kings Head is set within a Grade Two listed building dating from the seventeenth century. It is near to Monmouth Castle and the Forest of Dean. Rooms are colourfully decorated and all come with an en suite bathroom, television, tea and coffee making facilities. There is also Wi-Fi available. The Kings Head is also known as Kings Head Wetherlodge. It was formerly a coaching inn and has distinctive black wood beams on the exterior. It offers Wi-Fi throughout and there is a nearby car park. Food served includes breakfasts from seven in the morning until midday. Larger meals are also available as lunches and dinners. Monmouth town and Castle are a two-minute walk, as is the Regimental Museum. The forest of Dean is just fifteen minutes away by car.
This is a Wetherspoons hotel and the rooms are comfortable, spotlessly clean and very spacious. There is plenty of storage space for luggage and clothing and each room has tea and coffee making facilities. There’s also good sized bathrooms and a hair dryer is provided.
This hotel is in a wonderful setting in the centre of town. While there is no car parking attached to the hotel itself, there is a nearby car park, which takes around five minutes to walk to. Parking is charged for during the week, but is very reasonably priced and is free on Sundays.
Food is typical for Wetherspoons venues and is good value for money. Overall meals are of a decent quality, with generous portions. The serving staff are efficient and meals are served together in a timely manner. The drinks are also reasonably priced.
Communication with the hotel via email can be difficult and some guests had issues. Contact appears to be by phone only and this isn’t always answered, nor calls returned. Booking is probably best done through a third party online booking site.
The accommodation is mostly quiet considering its location attached to a pub. Sometimes though guests returning late at night create a lot of noise and street-facing rooms can also get noisy around pub closing time.
The historic hotel interior is quirky and a little off-kilter in places. However, aside for this the interiors in general are a little tired and faded and could all benefit from refurbishment. Furniture is on the shabby side and old and lumpy making sitting and relaxing an uncomfortable experience.
