Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts (Hay-on-Wye, United Kingdom)
The Hay Festival is a festival of literature and arts which takes place annually in Hay-on-Wye over 10 days at the beginning of June. It began in 1987 as a predominantly literature-based event but has grown to encompass a range of disciplines and the interchange of ideas across all genres. Its format has become known world-wide and it now runs 15 similar festivals around the world. In 2009 it was awarded the Queen’s Award for International Trade. The Festival mounts over 700 events, some free, some charging, and attracts internationally known writers, performers and personalities. Most events take place in a tented village just outside the town. There is a parallel festival for families and children, Hay Fever, which features workshops and children’s writers. Three car parks are made available and there is a daily parking charge. There is provision at the events for wheelchair users and the hard of hearing.
