Clearwell Caves (Coleford, United Kingdom)

Iron ore has been mined at Clearwell Caves in the Royal Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire for thousands of years. The miners earned the right to dig for the ore and were called Free Miners. Their descendents operate the site today. The Clearwell Caves is a natural cave system with a series of nine caverns. The workings are 4500 years old. On site there is a museum, blacksmith shop, ochre workshop, cafe and gift shop. There is a one and a half hour guided tour and for the more experienced caver semi-deep and deep cavingopportunites. There are also signposted walks on the surface. Open daily: 10am - 5pm (Mar - Oct) Tickets: Adults: £4.50 Seniors: Studnets: £4.00 Children (5 - 16): £2.80 Under 5 free There is a car park nearby.
