St Mary’s is Sydney’s Catholic cathedral and is the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney. It was built on the site or St Mary’s chapel, the first Catholic chapel in Australia which dated to 1821. The first cathedral was burnt down in 1865 and the rebuilt cathedral was completed in 1900 with the spires added a century later in 2000. The Cathedral stands 107m long, with the ceiling at a height of 22.5m and the height of the front towers and spires rising to almost 75m. It is built of sandstone in a style known as “Gothic Revival”.
