St James' Church (Sydney, Australia)

St James’ Church is the oldest church still standing in Sydney and was built in 1824. It was originally conceived as a courthouse but when plans to build a cathedral nearby were abandoned, the architect, Francis Greenaway, changed his designs to make a church instead. Most of the construction work was carried out by convicts using bricks that had been made by other convicts. The church contains the memorial stones of many prominent early settlers, many of whom died in violent circumstances during the building on the new colony. The church is open to visitors daily and offers free concerts from March to December on Wednesdays at 13:30.
