Municipal Theatre of Tunis (Tunis, Tunisia)

The Municipal Theatre in Tunis owes its nickname “bonbonnière Resplendy’ to its French architect, who signed other buildings in the capital, and to the Art Nouveau style in which it is built (a bonbonnière is a sweet box). Built in 1902, with funds from the City of Tunis, it has been the backdrop for many operas and plays, and the actress Sarah Bernhardt graced its stage. Tunisian stars have also appeared here, particularly since the country’s independence from France. The theatre was completely restored in 2001 and continues to stage plays, operas and concerts.
