Carthage Roman Villas (Tunis, Tunisia)

The Roman Villas in Carthage are arranged in tiers on the Odeon Hill. Parts of this ensemble of aristocratic villas have been excavated and restored for display. The most noted of these is the “Villa de la Volière”, so called because of the mosaics in the courtyard, representing various species of birds. Visitors to the site will see a copy of this mosaic, the original being in the Bardo museum in Tunis. It is also from this villa that a panorama over the shore can be seen. The villas are organised along parallel and perpendicular streets and today a garden and some trees provide shade for the visitors. The style and décor of the villas demonstrate the luxury in which their owners lived, and show this must have been an aristocratic residential area. The entry ticket also permits to view a number of other sites in Carthage. For those who wish to take photographs, a supplement is payable. The site is open all year, but opening hours vary.
