Al-Zaytuna Mosque (Tunis, Tunisia)

Jemaa az-Zitouna, the Great Mosque of Tunis is the oldest and biggest of the Tunisian capital. According to legend, the site was an ancient place of prayer near an olive tree, “zitouna” meaning olive in Arabic. In fact, aacording to excavations done there, it was built over a Christian basilica where the grave of Ste Olive might have been located. What we do know, is that the original construction took place in 732 (Gregorian calendar), but almost nothing remains from this first mosque. The current mosque was built in 864, and constantly modified in subsequent years, whilst always retaining the original shape of the polished marble courtyard. This is surrounded by three 18th century galleries. Today, it measures 5000 square meters, has 9 entrances and 184 antic columns sourced mostly from Carthage in the central prayer room. The red and white brick dome shows an almost Byzantine influence and the 44 meters minaret is from the 19th century. According to historians, prayer at the mosque has never been interrupted, even during the Spanish invasion when part of it was burnt down. Non-Muslim visitors can only get as far as the courtyard. Modest attire is recommended.
