Carthage amphitheatre (Tunis, Tunisia)

The Carthage amphitheatre was built in the first century by the Romans, under the reign of Julius Caesar. It mainly showed “bestiarii”, gladiators who fought beasts and hunts and massacres of wild animals. In 203, Saint Perpetua and her slave Saint Felicity were martyred here. With its 136 meters by 128, with an arena measuring 67 meters by 37, this is one of the biggest amphitheatres in Africa, as it could hold an estimated 30,000 spectators. Whilst still in fairly good condition in the Middle-Ages, stone robbing in later years means that only the arena with the entrances either sides where the animals were let in, and the undergrounds still exist. The amphitheatre is free to visit and always open.
