Jardin des Plantes (Paris, France)
The Jardin des Plantes covers an area of 28 hectares, in the 5th “arrondissement” of Paris along the left bank of the Seine. It is one of seven attractions depending of the Musé national d’histoire naturelle (Natural History Museum). The botanical gardens have its own botanical school which allows botanists to exchange views and seeds to maintain biotic diversity. Horticultural displays, Alpine gardens, Art Deco winter garden and Mexican and Australian hothouses are just a few of the points of interest for visitors. Originally conceived as a medicinal garden by Louis XIII’s physician, Guy de La Brosse, in 1626, it has since become France’s most important botanical gardens with over 4500 plants. It first opened its doors to the public in 1640. The nearest metro to get to it is the Gare d’Austerlitz. Entrance to the park is free and opening hours are from 7.30am to 7.30pm daily. As well as the natural history museum and the botanical gardens, there is also France’s oldest zoo within the grounds.
