Rue Mouffetard (Paris, France)

Rue Mouffetard, situated on the left bank of the Seine in the lively 5th arrondissement, is one of the oldest streets in Paris. During the time of the Roman occupation it was one of the 5 roads that connected the city with Rome. The 600m long and 6m wide street was later part of the village Saint-Médard which became part of Paris in the early 18th century. Today you can still find many historical buildings, some dating back as far as the 16th century and it is also home to the St. Médard church which was built during the 9th century. The street is mainly a pedestrian avenue and closed to motor traffic most of the times. It is lined by many restaurants, bars, cafes and shops and an open market is held here regularly. Many of the old buildings tell their story on their facade, like at number 112 where you can find the sign of a shop which is dated 1592. Rue Mouffetard runs in between the Place Contrescarpe and rue Descartes. Nearest Metro stations :Place Monge, Censier-Daubenton.
