Basilique du Sacré-Coeur (Paris, France)

The Sacred-Heart Basilika of Montmatre or Sacré Coeur, as it is also known in English, has a dominant position on Montmartre hill, the highest point in Paris. The white domed structure is one of the most famous images of the city, its whiteness maintained by the properties of the travertine stone used in its construction. It was built in a spirit of expiation and rededication after the destruction of the Paris Commune, but construction took from 1875 to 1914 and it was not without opposition. The design was the subject of a competition won by Paul Abadie, although he died before completion. Abadie’s winning design style was Romanesque-Byzantine, a novelty for the time. The interior decoration has patriotic themes and also incorporates one of the largest mosaics in the world depicting Christ in Majesty. The basilica also houses one of the world’s heaviest bells, the Savoyarde weighing 19 tons. Visitors can get to Sacré Coeur by funicular and there is a fine view of the city especially from the top of the dome. Details of services, visits and times are on the website. Entry is free but there is a charge to climb to the top of the dome.
