Rothwell Market House (Rothwell, United Kingdom)
Rothwell Market House stands on the edge of the Market Square in the centre of the small Northants town of Rothwell and is currently used as the office of the Town Clerk and the place where town council meetings are held. The building is one of several in the area commissioned by Thomas Tresham, the 16th Century Catholic activist and father of one of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators. It forms part of a local trail known as the Tresham Trail. Tresham was a man given to grand architecture but not to actually finishing what he started. The exterior of the Market House was built to a design by William Grumbold but the interior was left incomplete for 300 years before it was completed in 1895. The Market House is closed to the public for most of the year, opening only in September during the Heritage Open Days event. Entrance at that time is free. Access at other times should be discussed with the Town Clerk or members of the town’s council.
