The 14th Century castle was built for the Nevill dynasty, although the history of the estate goes back almost 1000 years. The fortifications, embattled walls and turrets have been preserved and can still be seen. Inside the castle are many treasures and works of art including Meissen porcelain, and paintings by artists such as Reynolds and Van Dyck. Visitors can walk round the 18th century ornamental walled gardens which still retains the original kitchen garden and many features. The 200 acre estate is home to red and fallow deer which have been preserved in the area since Norman times. The Coach House has a selection of coaches and carriages from the 18th and 19th centuries, whilst the tack room showcases equestrian trappings. Refreshments can be purchased in old stalls, which have been converted into the tea rooms, and gifts and souvenirs can be bought in the shop.
