Madara Rider (Shumen, Bulgaria)

The Madara Rider is a large rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau. Its 1.5 km from the village Madara and 20 km to the east of Shoumen. This is a Medieval stone relief located at 23 meters of height on a vertical 100 m-high cliff. The horseman is in real size - turned right and representing a figure of a knight, who is using a spike to stab the lion, lying at his horse’s feet. An eagle flyes in front of him and a dog runes after him. The scene is symbol of military triumph and gives an idea of the Medieval Bulgarian art. Madara was the principal sacred place of the first Bulgarian empire before Bulgaria’s conversion to Christianity in the 9th century. The monument is dated back to circa 710AD and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. Visits are possible every day from 8am to 7pm.
