Hram Sveti Atanasii (Varna, Bulgaria)

The church Hram Sveti Atanasii (St Athanasius) is located in the old Greek quarter in Varna city centre. Close by guests will find other popular museums and city attractions. The church sits among the ruins of the ancient Roman thermal baths. It is famous for its beautiful iconostasis, mural paintings, icons, as well as the carved altar and the bishop’s stall. Hram Sveti Atanasii is often described as one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in Varna and is a favourite location for wedding and baptizing ceremonies. The church was built in 1838 on the ruins of a small church with the same name, that was destroyed by fire in 1836. From 1961 to 1991 the temple was used as a museum of ancient icons and a scene for classical chamber music concerts. The temple was returned to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in 1991 and holds special services to celebrate great Orthodox feasts. The patronal feast of the church is celebrated on 18th January.
