Kyrenia Castle (Girne, Cyprus)

The castle in Girne dates back to the 7th century when the Byzantines reigned over the island. It was later extended by the Lusignans and Venetians. Excavations in and around the castle indicate that there already had been some kind of fortification as far back as 111 BC during the Roman and Hellenistic eras of the island. In 1570 the Ottomans attacked the city and the castle was surrendered to them. The castle of Girne can be found at the east side of the picturesque old harbour. Visitors access the castle over a draw-bridge that leads over the moat to the north-west entrance. Within the castle visitors can see the Byzantine Church of Saint George which was once located outside of the castle but was incorporated to the grounds when it was extended later on. Further there are the towers to be seen of which the south-east tower only dates back to Byzantine times, the other three towers were added by the Venetians. There are also several rooms to be seen, the defense platform which offers views over the old harbour and town, a Cistern, the powder magazine and artillery platform and the hall. The former living quarters are now home to the shipwreck museum. Opening times: Daily 9am 4.25 pm with the exemption of public holidays
