Historic Medrese (Famagusta, Cyprus)

The Historic Medrese of Famagusta is located right in the centre of the Old Town. The building is situated adjacent to the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque and it overlooks the Namik Kemal Square. The former religious school was built in the traditional Ottoman style during the 18th century, but has two rather unusual features - it is adorned by two granite columns that once stood in the ancient city Salamis. During the Venetian reign of the island the columns were brought to Famagusta and statues of the Lion of St Mark were set on top. These statues were later removed by the Ottoman who nevertheless decided to keep the columns to decorate their new school building. The building of the Historic Medrese has been restored but is now home to a cafe and restaurant.
