St Barnabas Monastery and Museum (Famagusta, Cyprus)

St Barnabas monastery has been built on the site where the tomb of the martyr has been found in the 5th century. St Barnabas was born in Salamis as the son of a Jewish family. He was educated in Jerusalem and later returned to the island to spread the words of the gospel together with the apostle Paul. In AD 75 he was stoned to death and buried by his followers, together with his copy of the bible made by St Matthew, in a secret location near Salamis. The original monastery that stood at the site was funded in the 5th century with money donated by the Byzantine emperor but destroyed later by Arab raiders. The monastery you can visit today dates back to 1756 and part of the columns that can be seen here once stood in the ancient city of Salamis. Since 1976 the monastery is not in use any more and is now home to an icon and archaeological museum. Most of the items on display in the archaeological museum have been found in the ruins of nearby Salamis. A small crypt outside of the monastery harbours the tomb of the Saint. The museum offers a courtyard cafe and parking facilities. Admission fee is about £1 per person
