St Hilarion (Girne, Cyprus)

St Hilarion is located within a rocky outcrop in the mountain range high above Kyrenia. The castle is one of the three crusader castles (Kantara, Buffavento, St Hilarion) that formed the defense line above the coast. Named after a saint who’d fled from Palestine during the 7th century and lived as a hermit on top if the hill it was first established as a monastery during the 10th century and later turned into a fortification by the Byzantines. The castle was later on extended and it is believed that it served as a summer residence for the Lusignan nobility. Today St Hilarion is the best preserved of the three castles. It consists of three parts, the lower section for the soldiers, the parapets and the middle section in which you can find the royal palace, the church and a cistern. It features a maze of rooms, staircases and tunnels to explore, the famous “Queens window” can be found in the western part of the ramparts. The castle is located on the western side of the dual carriageway that connects Kyrenia and Nicossia and is signed out. A car park is located at the base of the castle were also a cafe can be found. It rises up to 730 m from the car park and some of the paths are steep and uneven. There are no possibilities to buy refreshments in the castle itself and it is recommend to take water for a visit in summer. Opening hours: Summer 9am - 6pm (last entry 5pm) Winter 9am - 4.30pm (last entry 3.30pm) Admission: 5 YTL
