Hadrian's Wall (Hexham, United Kingdom)
Hadrian’s Wall is a stone wall that was built by the Romans as a defence against the Picts. It ran from the Roman fort of Sedgedunum near Wallsend in the east to the Solway Firth in the west, a distance of 117 Km. This wall still forms the majority of the modern day boundary between England and Scotland. In its heyday it was the strongest fortification in the whole of the Roman Empire. Today, large sections of the wall still exist and a footpath runs along its length. In terms of the number of annual visitors Hadrian’s Wall is the most popular tourist attraction in the north of England. In 1987 the whole site was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is now looked after by English Heritage.
