Goodwood House (Chichester, United Kingdom)

Goodwood House near Chichester belongs to the Duke of Richmond and is the family home of his son, the Earl of March. It was originally a hunting lodge for the first duke, a title created in the 17th century for an illegitimate son of Charles II. The modest Jacobean lodge has been transformed over the years into a great country house, with Palladian north and south wings and Regency style state apartments. The shape of the building is now three sides of an octagon. Land acquisitions mean the estate now comprises 17,000 acres of park and farmland. The estate also includes a racecourse, a car racing track, an aerodrome, a hotel and a golf course. The dukes have always been art collectors and the house contains paintings by Van Dyck, Canaletto, Stubbs and Lely, 18th century French furniture, Sèvres porcelain and Gobelin tapestries. The whole collection is of international standard and has its own curator. The house is open Sundays and Mondays 1pm to 5pm from the end of March to mid October, guided tours are provided. During August it is open Sunday to Thursday. There is a tea room, shop, car parking and facilities for disabled visitors. It is available for corporate and event hire.
