Weald and Downland Open Air Museum (Singleton, United Kingdom)

The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum is located just outside Singleton. It was established in 1967 with the aim of preserving building styles of the south east. Buildings due for demolition because of redevelopment or dilapidation were dismantled and re-erected at the museum. However ideally the museum likes to preserve buildings in situ where possible by providing expertise on conservation and construction techniques. The museum is arranged like a village although the buildings are not homogeneous, covering dates from the 13th to 19th centuries. At the centre are a chapel, school, market hall, a mill and a forge. Further out are cottages and farmhouses. Each building has information about its original location, dates, use and building technique. Some are furnished appropriately and have cottage gardens. The museum also has a collection of farm animals such as shire horses, Tamworth pigs and South Down sheep. There is a café which serves cakes made from flour produced at the mill as well as a shop, picnic area around the village pond, car park and toilets. Guided tours are available for groups and there are special facilities for schools. Courses are offered on local crafts.
