Beffroi (Amiens, France)
The belfry stands on what was formerly the main square of the town and has served as a watchtower, arms store, prison (until 1932) and meeting-place. It is known as ‘Ch’™Bédouf’ in the local Picard dialect. Over the six centuries since it was first built it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, the last time in 1988 when the crown was added. In its 18th century rebuilding it acquired a great bell, the ‘Marie-Firmine’ weighing 11 tonnes. That was lost in 1940, but the ‘oculus’ ‘“ the hole created in the wall to get the bell into the tower ‘“ is still visible. Now as a symbol of civic pride and power it is one of a group of belfries in northern France and Belgium inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. Visitors can take a guided tour of both the belfry and city hall at 10am on Sundays between 1 April and 30 September. It is also open on Heritage Days.
