La Citadelle (Arras, France)

This citadel was one of Vauban’™s defensive strong-points designed to protect the French frontiers. Collectively they now form a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built between 1668 and 1672, and surrounded by a network of defensive ditches with water fed in from the river Crinchon. Although built to Vauban’™s typical star-shaped pattern, it was poorly located strategically and acquired the nickname ‘Belle Inutile’ (beautiful but useless). Nevertheless, it has seen some action: it was used as a tank park during World War I and resistant fighters were executed here in World War II. A commemorative wall has been erected in their memory. The army still occupies the citadel. The tourist office organises tours during July and August.
