Victoria Embankment Gardens (London, United Kingdom)

The Victoria Embankment Gardens were created towards the end of the nineteenth century at the time of the construction of the Embankment on the north bank of the river Thames. It lies just to the east of Charing Cross Station and at the foot of the hill that leads to The Strand. It incorporates the Water Gate, built in 1626 to celebrate the entry of the Duke of Buckingham to the river. It now holds many statues, including Robert Burns. Of particular note is the entrance into the park from the rear lobby of the Savoy Hotel. This and the Savoy Theatre were built by Richard D’Oyly Carte, whose memorial is in the gardens. W.S. Gilbert was renowned for walking these gardens on the opening nights of his operettas. Memorials to him and the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan are also here.
