St Martin-in-the-Fields (London, United Kingdom)

St Martin-in-the-Fields is an Anglican church on Trafalgar Square in London. It is one of the city’s landmarks, although not a cathedral, partly because of its prominent position and partly because of its mission statement of being an “ever open door”. There has been a church on the site since the 13th century, although the existing building dates from 1726. It was designed in the classical style with a large pediment and surrounded by Corinthian columns. It is well known for its work and for holding events which go beyond the normal church services. In the 1920s it began its work with homeless people, which continues today, and caters for the large Chinese community with services held in Chinese. It has always been involved in music, and both Handel and Mozart played the organ here. The Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, co-founded by a former Director of Music at the church, is a renowned musical ensemble specialising in baroque music. Concerts are held regularly and there are free lunchtime concerts on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 1pm. Jazz concerts are held in the Crypt where there is also a popular café. The church is currently undergoing a major refurbishment.
